As you can see our mystery guest is Pro Football Hall of Fame Houston Oilers left guard Mike Munchak.
Mike Munchak was the first guard selected in the 1982 draft when the Houston Oilers used their number eight overall draft choice for the Penn State linemen.
Munchak would open holes for three 1,000 yard rushers Earl Campbell 1,301 yards in 1982, next in 88 Mike Rozier would rush for 1,002 the last 1,000 yard rusher he would block for was his last year (1992) for Lorenzo White 1,226. Rozier in 87 rushed for 957 yards.
During his career he would help with the Oilers passing attack that would have six 1,000 yard receivers,. In the 1991 and 92 season Drew Hill and Haywood Jeffires would top the 1,000 yard receiving mark, in 91 Jeffires lead the NFL with 100 receptions. IN the 90, 91 season Earnest Givins had narrowly missed the 1,000 yards mark with 971 yards and a mere four yard shy of the 1,000 yard mark. Speaking of the passing attack it was lead another Hall of Famer Warren Moon, Moon would lead the NFL in completions (362) yards (4,689) and touchdowns (33) in the 1990 season, Moon followed the 90 season to leading the NFL in completions (404) and yards (4,690). With Munchak blocking Moon would pass for 30,200 yards and 175 touchdown strikes. Following the completion of the 1990 season Moon earned the AP Offensive Player of the Year and the NEA MVP.
During Mike's illustrious 12 year career from 1982-1993 he was selected to nine Pro Bowls, nine time second team All-Pro selection, a four time All Pro choice, selected to the 1980's All Decade team. Munchak would play in 159 games during his career.
I asked Mike the following questions:
What was the best game you played? "The best game I played in was up in Pittsburgh when we beat them to win the Central Division" The game Mike is referring to is when the Oilers came out on top of the Steelers 26-17 December 19, 1993 putting the Oilers record at 10-4 clinching the AFC Central Division.
Who was the hardest player you had to block? " Randy White was the best player I played against" Mike would face Randy on three occasions with Dallas winning two of the three meetings. In 1982 Dallas won 37-7, in 85 the Cowboys came out on top again this time by a score of 17-10, the last game White played for the Cowboys facing the Oilers was in the 88 season which the Oilers won 25-17. White recorded two sacks facing the Oilers both of those sacks came in the 82 season.
What team gave you the most problems? "The Browns probably gave us the most problems over the years" During Munchak's tenure the Oilers squared off against the Browns 13 times in the regular season, once in the playoff which Houston won 10-7. The Oilers record against the Browns was three win 10 loses. From 1984-87 the Browns won all six games played.
After Mike's playing career he would join the coaching ranks. n 1994 the Oilers hired Munchak as the Oilers offensive quality control coach. From 1997-2010 Mike was the Oilers/Titans offensive line coach, 2011-13 he was the Titans head coach where he posted a record of 22-26, from 2014-18 the Steelers hired Munchak as their offensive line coach, 2019-21 Mike took his coaching talents to the Denver Broncos to serve as their offensive line coach, next Mike went to the Los Angeles Rams from 2023-24 as a offensive consultant. Do not be surprised if a team hires Mike for their offensive line coach as he has proven his knowledge both on and off the field of play.
